Renaming Existing Sites, Libraries and Lists URLs

In every organisation, there are constant changes taking place, including naming conventions. When a company name, team, project or any other component changes, many times this means a component in SharePoint may have to be renamed to reflect this change.

Sites

  1. Navigate to the site settings
  2. Select Title, Description and Logo
  3. Enter the new URL
  4. In O365,  select the settings icon then Site Information
  5. Enter the new name in the Site text box

Libraries 

  1. To rename a library URL, navigate to the library.
  2. On the Library tab, select Open in Explorer
  3. The library will open in explorer view. Navigate one level up and you will see all libraries listed as folders
  4. Select the folder/library you want to rename, and rename the folder
  5. Note – this will update the URL of the library not the description. Navigate to the library settings and update the display name via Title, Description and Navigation option
  6. If you are in the using the new experience for your library, Open in Explorer option won’t be available. Change the library to classic mode in the library advance settings temporarily to access to open with explorer option.

Lists

  1. To rename a list URL, navigate to any library in the site. You cannot open a list in explorer view instead we will get to it via a library.
  2. On the Library tab, select Open in Explorer
  3. The library will open in explorer view. Navigate one level up and you will see all libraries listed as folders plus a lists folder. All lists are contained  within this folder.
  4. Open the lists folder and select the list to rename.
  5. Note – this will update the URL of the list not the description. Navigate to the list settings and update the display name via Title, Description and Navigation option
